Julie Dorenbos_Susie_Celek_Terrel_OwensTerrell Owens—an NFL legend, and perhaps one of the greatest EGOS…(oops: Eagles) to ever play in Philadelphia. How do you walk the fine line between roasting and T.O.asting an icon? Comedy’s clever sharp shooters, Joe Conklin and Al Morganti were the masterminds behind the 1st annual Philly Sports Roast. Both of yours truly took to the stage as co-hosts for the 600+ in attendance at the Crystal Tea Room, anxious to be a part of the night’s theme, settling “Unfinished Business.”

Comedy Central’s Jeff Ross said it best, “You only roast the ones you love.” As expected, one of our most passionate players returned home to a genuine prodigal son welcome. “Now Ladies and Gentlemen, the guest of honor, that 6′ 3″ wide receiver from Tennessee Chattanooga… number 81, Terrellllll Owwwwwwens!” exclaimed 76ers’ announcer Matt Cord. The Eagles fight song and thematic jingle repeating the iconic initials “T.O., T.O., T.O.” set the tone as he made his way to the red velvet chair.

The universal warmth from the crowd’s standing ovation seemed to have evoked the spirit of a one-handed grab in the end zone, as the entire room stood in appreciation for his glory days as a beloved Eagle.

Light hearted and loyal is for the “Birds.” The audience may have come with cupcakes and sparklers, but this is a roast, people! There are dirty words to be said, secrets to expose and an easy target to hit;

  • “What is the difference between T.O. & Joe Conklin? People laugh at T.O.”
  • “T.O., I want you to pay attention, because we all know you didn’t pay child support.”

“When Santa threw snowballs at T.O., he dropped half of them.”
